Hiring a motorhome anywhere in the world can be expensive!

But there is something liberating about moving from place to place with every night's accommodation just 2 feet behind you. After experiencing RVing around Tasmania and Route 66 (USA), we appreciate the ease of stopping to admire a great view, making a cuppa or just deciding to stay right there for the night while sipping a red and watching the sun set. But unless you do plenty of research and prepare ahead of time, it can be just as expensive as hotels and quite often even more so.

There is a vast difference between buying a motorhome in Europe and a motorhome in the U.S., and not just the registration and insurance specs. The majority of motorhomes in Europe are more streamlined, to fit narrow laneways and heat efficiently (no one wants to sleep in a tin refrigerator on wheels), and there seems to be a preference for bunk beds and rear kitchens whereas U.S motorhomes tend to be on the much bigger (think inflated) side with a huge range of layouts, slides and every conceivable luxury. Australian's call it the "go big or go home" factor, and Americans do it with flamboyant aplomb!

For both motorhome purchases, we require a few standard features; 8ish meters (28ft), permanent rear bed, heating and full bathroom. Dual batteries, solar, generators and satellite linkup were the extras we will navigate between the two different purchases. Room to store 2 electric bikes was also a must as this is our mode of short distance transport.

While travelling through Europe we rely on our phones for GPS navigation with an eSIM however, once in the U.S we will switch to a satellite system.
